Summer Travels Part 1: Portland for Oma’s 90th Birthday

Posted on: August 19, 2011

HelpingWe’ve been off traveling quite a bit… so here’s the report on the first phase, a trip to Portland for a reunion with twenty-some-odd members of Grammy’s family in honor of Oma’s Ninetieth Birthday! Shoshanna met lots of family she’d never met before (Grammy’s aunt and cousins, mostly), some family she’d met a long long time ago (my cousins Liz and Liana), and some she’d seen as recently as two years ago (Grammy’s siblings).

Hissing CockroachAfter all the birthday shenanigans were over and the rest of the family had left, we stuck around for a couple of more days. We went to OMSI where, among other things, Shoshanna grossed me out by holding the hissing cockroaches in the biology lab. We took one day and drove up to a cute town called Astoria to poke around and then out to Fort Stevens State Park to go to the beach. Shoshanna of course LOVED the beach and despite our admonitions to not go in the water (it was freezing and very windy), she got soaked.

Shoshanna loves Daisy. Daisy loves Shoshanna. We had kind of planned for that, though, and had brought clothes for her to change into before we went to dinner at Emily & Jake’s house where we ate burgers and Shoshanna chilled on the couch with Daisy Dog.

And there’s no good place in the narrative for it, but I do adore this picture of Shoshanna and Grammy.
