March of Dimes’ Gourmet Gala

Posted on: March 16, 2009

Donation CardPicture this image, only 10 feet tall. That was the banner hanging in the lobby of the Grand Ballroom at the Adams Mark hotel on Saturday night. And these donation cards were on every table.  I don’t know how much money the event raised; it was to be announced at the end of the night and either I didn’t hear it or they hadn’t announced it when we left around 11:45.

The gala was a black-tie event with plentiful hors d’oeuvres (phyllo dough filled with goat cheese topped with grilled mushroom… drool…), cooking contest, raffles (Matthew failed to win a 42″ plasma TV), a five course meal, dancers, and loud music.  Stacey told us that they were expecting 675 people.  Our job for the night was to tell Shoshanna’s story, show the fundraising video, and reinforce the mission of the March of Dimes.  I got the easy part – telling her story, crediting the MoD’s funding of the research that led to the development of artificial surfactant.  Matthew took the harder part – the actual asking for donations which involved using the MoD approved language.

In my case, I think it was a very good thing that we were under stage lights so I could convince myself that the ballroom was not as big as I knew it to be.

It was a good excuse to get dressed up all fancy-like, have a nice dinner, and hang out with the other local Ambassador Families.

You guys rule! I can’t wait to see that huge poster. And that family picture is great, too.
