Second Birthday Wackiness

Posted on: September 26, 2006

Well, Shoshanna’s birthday festivities have already lasted several days, and are likely to continue (off and on) for a few more.On Friday, I put together her gifts from us and from Grandma and Opa – the play kitchen and the Pooh table and chairs.

Then I picked her up from daycare, where she was given a set of DVDs (that we haven’t looked at yet). We collected Daddy from work and headed to the airport to fly to Grandma and Opa’s house for Rosh Hashanah. Uncle Josh (“Djosh”) and Aunt Jacy (“Djosh”) picked us up at the airport and we all went to have dinner at Grandma & Opa’s. Shoshanna took one look at the family room full of toys and squirmed down and ran off ot play. She had a litle bit of dinner with us and went to bed around 9:30 (about 2 hours after her usual bedtime).

Saturday morning we got up around 7 (total sleep missed so far: 2 hours), pottered around the house until it was time to go to noon services (and drop Shoshanna off with the babysitters at the Temple). Shoshanna declined to nap before services, and crashed after a long time runningeatingplayingdrinking. Unfortunately she woke up when we put her in the car and she didn’t go back down (total sleep missed so far: 3.5 hours). Saturday night there were 20ish people at Grandma and Opa’s for dinner. It was a very nice day out and Shoshanna was running around on the deck, occasionally declaring “Opa cook meat!” as Opa worked at the grill.

Shoshanna also made a new friend – Drew, who just turned three, which makes him Shoshanna’s ideal friend. She followed him around, copied him playing with his Matchbox cars, learned to say his name very quickly (“Doh!”), and they didn’t get in a single fight. (I was expecting at least some conflict, especially when it became evident that Shoshanna thought that the cars that Drew had brought with him were the best toys around.) When the time came for Shoshanna’s early-birthday cake, Drew was more than happy to help her blow out the candles.

Despite being totally exhausted, Shoshanna was pretty darn happy all evening Saturday, and passed out as Matthew was putting her to bed at 9:30 pm. (Total sleep missed so far: 6 hours.)

Sunday morning, up at about 7. Again, pottering around the house until we went over to Josh and Jacy’s to see their new house and for the boys to move some couches. (Aside: Don’t ever rent from UHaul. It’s not worth the hassle.) Shoshanna approved most heartily of the new furniture, as did Uncle Josh.

We had another aborted nap – Jacy and I swear we checked her study for cats before we put her down, but Mark (one of Shoshanna’s feline cousins) snuck into the room and woke her up maybe half an hour into the nap. And she didn’t go back to sleep. Back to Grandma and Opa’s for playing and dinner. Shoshanna did end up napping for a bit… I don’t remember exactly how long. (We’ll call it half an hour of missed sleep, for a total of 6.5 hours.)

Back to BWI for the trip home… our 9:30 flight was pushed back to 10:30 and then we didn’t actually leave until 11. And of course, Shoshanna will no longer go to sleep when she gets tired. So she was up until 11, slept for maybe an hour on the plane, and then woke up when we got off the plane.  Got her back to sleep about 12:30, and she woke up at about 7:40 on Monday morning. (Total sleep missed for the weekend: 10.5 hours.)

Which of course brings us to her ACTUAL birthday. Hooray! Shoshanna is two! We played, went to toddler gym, took a very long nap, went for a short walk, had “tissa” (pizza) for dinner (pizza being her all time favorite food), played with some of her new toys, and went to bed on the early end of bedtime. And rather than boring you with all the fine details, since this is probably the longest post I’ve ever written, I’ll just give you pictures.

Heh, heh – treife. 🙂 🙂

Happy Birthday, Shoshanna! It sounds like you had a great time and it looks like you got some great loot! Hooray, little girl–you’re amazing!

Wishing many more very happy days for all!!!

Happy Birthday from your now-two-too friends Gavin and Dexter! We got the same kitchen for our birthday, too, and we love cooking “suppa”. Mommy still hasn’t had the baby and we’re glad because we don’t have to share birthdays! Here’s to toddlerhood!
