Phase One…

Posted on: April 12, 2005

Until recently, Shoshanna hasn’t gone through anything that I would have called a “phase.” Note the beginning of that sentence – until recently.

A couple of days ago, I started noticing that Shoshanna wouldn’t hold still while eating – she insisted on looking around the room. She also has figured out that she can knock the bottle out of her mouth. These two things combined make feedings really entertaining. We pretty much chalked it up to her learning to exert some control over her environment. Then, last night, I was poking around the Interweb, and found some stuff on distractible babies. Gee, could they please put Shohsanna’s picture alongside the description of the distractible baby?

This phase can actually lead to insufficient weight gain or even weight loss in extreme cases, but so far we seem to still be able to get enough food into her – it’s just happening an ounce or two at a time. Today she’s eaten while looking out the window, looking at me while Matthew was feeding her, studying all the things on the refrigerator, and looking at the fan (she’s taking a page out of Savannah‘s book and becoming even more fascinated with our ceiling fan than she was before). She’s grumped because she was bored and wanted something new to look at. And she’s spent whole minutes watching the blinky lights on her swing.

Let’s hope the eating portion of the phase doesn’t last too long, otherwise we’ll be back to spending our whole lives feeding her.

The new pictures are super cute!

Is distractibility genetic? 🙂

Is someone implying that one of you is distractible? Now who would that be??? (comment from Grammy)
