The Incredible Receding and Proceeding Hairline

Posted on: February 17, 2005

So when Shoshanna was born, she had a fair bit of hair (by which I mean on her head, not the fetal fuzz that she also had lots of). I don’t think that she’s actually lost much of it, but if you look at the pictures, you’ll see that it looks like she did. I theorize that what actually happened is that she grew into her hairline – the amount of hair on her head didn’t increase at the same time that her head was growing, leading to a very funny bald baby mullet (as the remaining hair got longer and longer…). In the past week or so, however, she’s gotten a lot of new hair growth on the top of her head, to the point that she actually has a vaguely normal hairline. It’s still mullet-like, and she has a bald spot on the back of her head where it leans against whatever she’s lying on/sitting in, but the hair is definitely on the upswing.

I had noticed that she was looking balder than earlier. I hope by the time she goes to kindergarten she will have a full head of hair!

Hehe! My cousin (now 15 yrs old) was born with a full head of dark hair. By the time he was 6 months old it had progressed through male pattern baldness, a mohawk, then complete baldness. When it grew back, it was blond.

Even I can’t figure out the genetic anomaly behind that one.

For once, Great Grandpa can’t be blamed for baldness – it’s the maternal grandfather!
