The Continuing Adventures of SuperPreemie

Fewer meds, long visits

Posted on: December 3, 2004

I spent basically all day at the hospital – I had an 11:30 appointment with the lactation consultant and wanted to try to nurse Shoshanna while she was there. The one factor that I didn’t count on was that Shoshanna actually gets hungry every 2.5 hours rather than every 3, and by the time I got there at 11, she was already very grouchy. Her pacifier and a song quieted her down for a couple of minutes, but by 11:20 there was no way that she was going to be able to hang on – I went ahead and tried to nurse her, but she was too agitated. She was, however, very enthusiastic about her bottle and did very well with it. I put her back in her isolette, but she was having some reflux so I took her out and held her upright until she was feeling better and then put her back. She fell asleep very contentedly after that. I also gave her a bottle at 3 pm, but she fell asleep 25 ml into that one – had she not been on a 3 hour feeding “schedule”, I would’ve not worried about it and just figured she’d get hungry sooner. But she’s on a schedule, so she ended up getting the tail end of that feed into her tube.

In the late afternoon Shoshanna’s Grammy arrived and got to hold her, which she (Grammy) was very excited about. Shoshanna slept contentedly the whole time.
