The Continuing Adventures of SuperPreemie

Preemies have no immune systems

Posted on: October 10, 2004

On Friday afternoon/evening, Shoshanna came down with a bacterial infection. This sort of thing is quite common in preemies, but is still very, very scary for the parents. The antibiotics they are giving her (a whole cocktail of ’em) are doing the job, however, and Sunday night she looked 1000% better than she did Friday night – she was back to opening her eyes and looking at the world, squirming, etc. Also having hiccups that were so violent that it looked like she was having a seizure, which was really frightening. For the time being, Shoshanna is off of breast milk; last night’s nurse wasn’t sure when they’d start her on it again. She didn’t lose any appreciable weight while she was sick, which is encouraging.
