Updates ahoy!

Lots of things to report, most of them school-related.

The human brain is a very strange place…

Shoshanna’s fifth birthday was the easiest by far.  We were both so busy and she’s loving life so much right now that it wasn’t particularly traumatic.
This week, though, I’m getting ready to go to an academic conference.  It’s the same conference that I was at just before Shoshanna was born, and I’m remembering that getting [...]

echoes of a thud

Remember the other shoe that dropped last September?  And all the evaluation that eventually led to Shoshanna being diagnosed with a 25% gross motor delay and her starting to receive physical therapy 2x/week?
That other shoe now contains Sure Step SMOs.

Lookit we were on the teevee!

Yesterday morning Shoshanna and I went down to the local ABC station to tape a story for the health segment and to be live on the mid-morning talk show.  I was a little concerned about the live bit, but the host presented her with a DVD of Sleeping Beauty before the taping started and she [...]

Houston, we have IEP!

Posted by: Sarah on: March 11, 2009

Not only was Thursday the March of Dimes Family Kickoff, it was also the day of the big meeting at the school district to find out whether or not Shoshanna would be getting PT at school. We had gotten a letter about six weeks ago notifying us of this meeting, inviting us to attend, [...]

Poster Child!

Posted by: Sarah on: January 16, 2009

We often joke about how Shoshanna is a poster child. “Poster child for 25-weekers”, they called her in the NICU (Sue S. especially was fond of that phrase).  Statistically, yeah, she is.  She’s the exception to the micropreemie outcomes rule.
And this year, she is quite literally the poster child.  We were asked yesterday to [...]

The fly on the wall…

Posted by: Sarah on: January 8, 2009

By complete happenstance, I got to see some of Shoshanna’s gym class at school today.  We slept in a bit this morning, so we got to school at about 10 ’til 9, and then I chatted with a friend in the locker room before heading upstairs to work out, so by the time I was [...]

The contrasts of Shoshanna…

Posted by: Sarah on: November 20, 2008

This week really encapsulates the contrasts of Shoshanna…
On Tuesday morning, we were at the Frederick  Law Olmsted school for her kindergarten readiness testing – phase one of finding out if she qualifies for the gifted & talented program.
48 hours later, I was at Aspire meeting with a social worker to give her “social history” in [...]

*thud*

That sound?  That’s the other shoe dropping.
Fortunately it’s a very little shoe.  A Shoshanna-sized shoe, even.
We have been keeping an eye on Shoshanna’s gross motor development for a while, and noting that her left side still lags significantly behind her right, and that there is noticeably less muscle mass in her left calf than in [...]

We’d better watch what we say around this kid…

Posted by: Sarah on: September 29, 2008

Shoshanna and I had the following conversation in the car on the way to her GI appointment this morning:
S: Mama, what’s a due date?
Me: That’s when you expect a baby to be born.
S:  Why my due date was in January but I didn’t come ’til September?
Me: Well, September came BEFORE January, and because you were [...]
